How many types of dumpling are there in China?

There are many types of dumpling in China. Maybe their shapes, materials, tastes are very different.


1.Boiled dumpling(Chinese name: Shuijiao 水饺, Jiaozi 饺子) -not spicy, mostly salty, hot food, boiled in water, dumpling wrapper is made of wheat flour, dumpling filling is vegetable or meat, sometimes dumpling filling is mixture of vegetables and meat, without soup inside, mainly in north China.


2.Char siu bun(Chinese name: Chashaobao叉烧包) -not spicy, sweet or salty, hot food, steamed, dumpling wrapper is made of wheat flour, dumpling filling is meat of pork, without soup inside, mainly in Guangdong Province, south China.


3.Crab dumplings in Soup (Chinese name: Xiehuangtangbao蟹黄汤包)-not spicy, light salty, hot food, steamed, dumpling wrapper is made of wheat flour, dumpling filling is mixture of crab, chicken, pork and soup, mainly in Jiangsu Province, east China. Be careful, there is much hot soup inside, let it cooling down before eat it.


4.Dumpling(Chinese name: Tangtuan 汤团, Tuanzi 团子) - not spicy, sweet or salty ball, hot food, boiled in water, dumpling wrapper is made of sticky rice, dumpling filling is sesames, beans, sugar, vegetable or meat, sometimes dumpling filling is mixture of vegetables and meat, some types without soup inside.

5.Egg dumpling(Chinese name: Danjiao蛋饺) - not spicy, mostly salty, hot food, boiled in water or steamed, dumpling wrapper is made of egg, dumpling filling is vegetable or meat, sometimes dumpling filling is mixture of vegetables and meat, without soup inside, mainly in east China.

6.Fresh fried dumplings(Chinese name: Shengjian 生煎)-not spicy, light salty, hot food, fried in pan, dumpling wrapper is made of wheat flour, dumpling filling is pork, soup inside, mainly in Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shanghai and Zhejiang Province.

7.Fried glutinous rice dumpling covered with sesames (Chinese name: Matuan 麻团)- not spicy, sweet ball, hot food, fried in oil, dumpling wrapper is made of sticky rice, covered with sesames, dumpling filling is sesames, beans or sugar, sometimes there is no dumpling filling, without soup inside.

8.Rice dumpling(Chinese name: Zongzi 粽子)- not spicy, sweet or salty, hot food, boiled in water, dumpling wrapper is made of green plant leaves, dumpling filling is sticky rice, beans, sugar, jujubes, yolks of duck’s eggs or pork, without soup inside. Be careful, rice dumpling wrapper cannot be eaten.

9.Small meat dumpling, Small steamed bun(Chinese name: Xiaolongbao 小笼包)-not spicy, a little sweet, hot food, steamed, dumpling wrapper is made of wheat flour, dumpling filling is meat of pork, with soup inside, mainly in south China. Be careful, there is much hot soup inside, let it cooling down before eat it.

11.Sumai, Steamed Pork Dumplings(Chinese name: Shaomai 烧麦) - not spicy, mostly salty, hot food, steamed, dumpling wrapper is thin and made of sticky rice, dumpling filling is vegetable or meat of pork, sometimes dumpling filling is mixture of vegetables and meat, without soup inside, mainly in south and east China.

14.Wonton(Chinese name: Huntun馄饨, Yuntun云吞, Bianshi 扁食) -not spicy, mostly salty, hot food, boiled in water, dumpling wrapper is made of wheat flour, dumpling filling is vegetable or meat, sometimes dumpling filling is mixture of vegetables and meat, without soup inside, mainly in south China.
